Virtual ANS is a software simulator of the unique Russian synthesizer ANS - photoelectronic microtonal/spectral musical instrument created by Russian engineer Evgeny Murzin from 1938 to 1958.
The instrument was used by Stanislav Kreichi, Alfred Schnittke, Edison Denisov, Sofia Gubaidulina, Edward Artemiev and other Soviet composers.
You can hear the sound of the ANS in Andrei Tarkovskys movies Solaris, The Mirror, Stalker.

While the other similar programs are just fun toys, the Virtual ANS is a full-featured professional tool which allows you to create unusual, deep, atmospheric sounds. With this app you can draw a complete piece of music, or convert sound to image (sonogram) and then make some complex sonogram modifications.
Actually the potential of the program has not been explored yet, so it (as well as PixiVisor) is more appropriate for people who are searching for something new, not afraid to experiment with sound.

Pros and cons of Virtual ANS app for iPhone and iPad

Virtual ANS app good for

i loved metasynth on my old powerbook ...this synth is based on the same original ans synth .. many options and plenty of parameters to play and tweak.. i am so grateful for this app it brings this type of synthesis into the future .. thank you another amazing job...only missing option is non wifi import of jpeg. this app is essential for ambient and experimental sounds and music.the developer is the most amazing and creative person
Wonderful. Try to loading a Wave file into it and explorer. It. ist a bit like granular synthesis. Top App. 10 Stars.
Developer did a very good job. Perfect for sound design or just to play around. Interface is also very well made.
Does exactly what he says. Good tools and great zooming let you draw very precise shapes that play back as sound. Works fine on iPad 2. I would love to see a way to load in photos from my iPad!
Unique. Great for limitless music creation, sound fx. Great job, I cant wait to see what updates bring.
This is a compelling app to work with. Its unpredictably gives composer performers a chance to get brilliant, unexpected sounds. It requires work to get the most out of it: it rewards experimentation by the user. I do wish the functionslike save and load were more obviously available. I am also having trouble importing pre-recorded sounds.

Some bad moments

Starts up and just shows black screen, nothing else iOS 6.1.3 hopefully fixed soon as looks like an exiting program.
A nice app for using sound to create complex atmospheric sounds. The user interface takes some getting used to if you havent used any of the developers apps before. It would be nice to be able to import files into the app via open in or copy and paste within the app from other apps. The web browser wifi file transfer does work well though and you can use it to create a file structure within the app for your creations and source material. Hopefully the developer will have a manual soon. There are already quite a few videos that give you a sense of what you can do. Be prepared to click and slide on the controls in the app to discover what it can do. If youre not comfortable with doing this, it could be a frustrating app for you.
My name is Jordan Rudess and I pronounce this app as top notch wizardry. Wow. Just wow. Jordan
Neat way to manipulate and visualize sound, not quite as capable as pc programs like photosounder and metasynth but fun and an application that just begs for touchscreen. Very impressed, gets my 5 stars.
Excellent sound quality, unique approach and old school charm. This is a great ap. The only thing that caused me to give it less than 5 stars is the non-standard interface, which appears to be derived from the fact that this is a generic program available in several operating systems as opposed to having been created exclusively for the ios. I have the program on my mac, but the iPad version is better to work with. Look up the details on the historic ANS instrument to get where this ap is coming from. Its very interesting and reveals the aps old school inspiration. The ap is worth every penny, but its not for pop devas or those who want to "produce" yet another rap with the usual boring, formulaic 4/4, synchopated backbeat drum track at 120 bpm. This goes a totally different way.
This could be so much more cool and powerful if it had image and audio import n export. As it is it came as a huge disappointment to me, because its coolness and usefulness is lamed down by the file management issues.
